Etymology

Dimineață descends from the Vulgar Latin phrase de mane, meaning "in the morning," with a Romanian nominal suffix added to turn the phrase into a noun. The same Latin base mane gave Romanian its word for "tomorrow," mâine, through a separate formation. So the two Romanian words are relatives that split in meaning: one kept the sense of morning, the other shifted to the next day.
