Etymology

Romanian borrowed "drog" from French "drogue" in the modern era, as part of a wave of French vocabulary that entered Romanian in the 19th century. The French word itself has a disputed origin, possibly from Middle Dutch "droge (vate)", meaning "dry (barrels)", a reference to how goods and spices were once shipped and stored. Because the word arrived through borrowing rather than direct inheritance, it has no reconstructed Proto-Indo-European root.
