Etymology
Dură is the feminine singular form of the adjective dur, borrowed from French dur and going back to Latin durus, meaning hard or firm. The word entered Romanian during the nineteenth century as part of a wave of French and Latin-based vocabulary that reshaped the modern standard language. Latin durus is also the source of Romanian a dura (to last) and durată (duration), since something durable was originally understood as something hard enough to endure.
