Etymology
Romanian "elefant" comes from French "éléphant", reinforced by Latin "elephantus". The Latin word came from Greek "elephas" (stem "elephant-"), which the Greeks likely borrowed from a non-Indo-European language, possibly Egyptian or another language of the ancient Near East. The word originally covered both "elephant" and "ivory" in Greek.
