Etymology
Beneficiu comes from Latin beneficium, a compound of bene ("well") and facere ("to do"), so the literal sense is "a good deed" or "a favor done." Romanian did not inherit this word directly from spoken Latin; it borrowed it in the 19th century from French bénéfice and learned Latin, as part of the modernization of Romanian vocabulary. The root facere goes back to the same ancient root that gives English "do" and "deed."
