Etymology
Emisiune came into Romanian from French émission, which traces to Latin emissio, emissionis, a noun built from emittere, meaning to send out. The Latin verb combines ex- (out) with mittere (to send). Romanian adapted the French -ion ending as -iune, a pattern typical of 19th century borrowings from French and Latin. The original sense, an act of sending out, narrowed over the 20th century to mean a radio or television program, since a broadcast is literally sent out over the air.
