Etymology

Exagerat comes from the verb a exagera, borrowed from French exagérer, which in turn traces to Latin exaggerare, meaning to heap up or pile beyond measure. The Latin word joins the prefix ex- to aggerare, a verb built on agger, a mound or rampart. Over time the physical sense of piling something too high shifted to the figurative sense of overstating something.
