Etymology

Romanian "mărie" is built from the adjective "mare" ("great") plus the abstract-noun suffix "-ie," and it originally meant "greatness." In Old Romanian chancery language it hardened into a courtly honorific, used in formulas like "Măria Ta" ("Your Greatness," i.e. Your Majesty) to address princes and boyars. The adjective "mare" itself is often traced by Romanian linguists to Latin "mas, maris" ("male"), whose meaning shifted toward "grand, great" in popular Latin, though the derivation is debated. Today "mărie" survives mainly in historical texts and in the fossilized titles "Măria Sa" and "Măria Ta."
