Etymology

Romanian borrowed "gară" from French "gare" in the nineteenth century, along with the railway itself. The French word came from the verb "garer", meaning to shelter or moor safely, which traces back to a Frankish root meaning to watch over or guard. A station, in this sense, was first a place where something was kept safe, before it narrowed to mean a stop for trains.
