Etymology
Romanian gol descends from a Common Slavic adjective golŭ, meaning bare or naked, absorbed into Romanian through long contact with Slavic-speaking neighbors, like many basic adjectives in the language. The same root produced the everyday words for naked in Bulgarian and Russian. Separately, the football sense, a scored goal, is a much later borrowing from English goal, which happened to sound close enough to the existing word that it was folded into gol rather than kept as a distinct foreign term.
