Etymology

The verb a încerca comes from Latin circare, meaning to go around or search through, built on circus, a circle. Old Romanian had a plain verb a cerca, to search or test, and the prefix în- was added to sharpen its sense toward attempting something. Over time the compound form pushed out the simple verb, and a încerca settled into the everyday meaning of to try.
