Etymology

Romanian borrowed "independent" from French "indépendant" in the nineteenth century, as the language modernized its vocabulary. The French word traces to Latin "in-" (not) attached to "dependens", the present participle of "dependere", meaning to hang from or depend on. The sense shifted from a literal image of hanging to the abstract idea of relying on something.
