Etymology
Judecă is a form of the verb a judeca, inherited from Latin iudicare. Iudicare is built from ius, meaning law or right, joined to the root of dicere, meaning to say or pronounce, so the original sense was to pronounce the law. Romanian kept this legal core and broadened it to cover everyday judgment and opinion, much as other Romance languages did.
