Etymology

Dansa entered Romanian in the 19th century as part of a large wave of French borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary, taken directly from French danser. French danser is generally traced back to Frankish, a Germanic language, though its exact root is disputed among etymologists. Romanian already had the older native verb a juca for traditional dance, so dansa arrived attached mainly to Western-style social and ballroom dancing.
