Etymology
Smulge descends from Latin exmulgere, a compound of ex- ("out") and mulgere ("to milk, to draw out by squeezing"). Romanian regularly turns this Latin ex- prefix into an s- before a consonant, the same shift seen in words like a spăla (to wash, from expalliare). The bare root survives on its own in the related Romanian verb a mulge, "to milk". Over time the compound's narrow sense of milking widened into the general idea of pulling or wrenching something out by force.
