Etymology

Liceu came into Romanian in the nineteenth century from French lycée, part of a wave of French borrowings tied to the modernization of Romanian schooling. Lycée itself traces to Greek Lykeion, the gymnasium near Athens where Aristotle taught. The Greek name referred to a nearby temple of Apollo Lykeios. The deeper origin of the epithet Lykeios is debated among specialists, so no single Proto-Indo-European root can be stated with confidence.
