Romanian borrowed "studio" from Italian, where it originally meant a place of study or artistic work, ultimately from Latin "studium" (zeal, application, study). The word entered Romanian in the 19th and 20th centuries alongside the spread of the arts and, later, radio, film, and television. It kept its Italian spelling and neuter gender, unlike many older Latin-derived Romanian nouns.
