Etymology
Tigru entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of the wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary, replacing or supplementing older Slavic-derived animal names. It comes from French tigre (or directly from Latin tigris), with the final -u added to fit the typical Romanian masculine noun pattern, the same way metru came from mètre and litru from litre. Latin tigris itself was borrowed from Greek tigris, and the word is generally thought to trace back further to an Iranian source, though the exact path is debated among specialists.
