Etymology

Jurat comes from the past participle of a jura, to swear, which Romanian inherited from Latin iurare by way of French juré. The Latin verb is built on ius, meaning law or right, so the word's core sense is a person bound by an oath. Romanian later turned the participle into a noun for a member of a jury, a use it shares with French and Italian.
