Etymology

Jurământ comes from the Latin verb iurare, to swear, combined with the noun-forming suffix -amentum, which gave the result-noun iuramentum, an act of swearing. Romanian kept this pattern closely, turning it into jurământ with the native suffix -ământ that also appears in words like legământ. The root iur- also underlies jurist and jurisdicție, all tracing back to Latin ius, law or right.
