Etymology

Rachetă entered Romanian from French roquette, which came from Italian rocchetta, a diminutive of rocca, meaning distaff. Early rocket casings were compared to a distaff because of their long, cylindrical, spool-like shape. The related French word raquette, from the same Italian family, gave Romanian rachetă its second, separate sense of a tennis or badminton racket. Russian raketa and German Rakete likely reinforced the rocket sense in Romanian during the twentieth century, especially in military and space contexts.
