Etymology

Mânca descends from Latin manducare, meaning to chew, which in Vulgar Latin came to mean simply to eat. The same Latin verb gave rise to the everyday word for eat in several other Romance languages, while Latin's own classical verb for eating, edere, largely died out. Romanian kept the sound changes typical of its own branch of Latin, turning manducare into mânca over centuries.
