Etymology
Mărt comes from Latin Martius (mensis), "the month of Mars." It is the same root that gave standard Romanian martie, but mărt keeps the bare Latin base without the added -ie suffix. The word now survives mainly in regional speech, old texts, and peasant calendar lore, rather than in formal usage.
