Etymology
Romanian dictionaries list the origin of "preajmă" as uncertain. Some scholars propose a Slavic source, given the word's shape and its close semantic ties to other Slavic-derived Romanian terms for boundary and surrounding space, but no source form is agreed on. The word survives mainly in the fixed phrase "în preajma", used for both physical nearness and nearness in time.
