Etymology

Meci is a direct borrowing of the English word match, spelled to match Romanian pronunciation. It entered Romanian in the early twentieth century alongside a wave of English sports vocabulary, including fotbal and gol, as organized football spread across Europe. Because it arrived as a whole borrowed word rather than through inherited Latin stock, it has no deeper Indo-European root within Romanian.
