Etymology
Romanian took "port" from French "port", reinforced by Italian "porto", both descending from Latin "portus" (harbor). Latin "portus" is built on the same root as "portare" (to carry), the idea being a place where goods are carried in and out by ship. The word entered Romanian during the 19th-century wave of French-based modernization of the vocabulary.
