Etymology
Așteptă is a form of the verb a aștepta, which goes back to Latin exspectare, built from ex- and spectare, to watch or look out for. In popular Latin the prefix shifted toward ad-, giving the Romanian a- that opens the word. The form așteptă itself is the third person singular of the simple past tense, a tense used mainly in narration.
