Etymology
Mergeam is the imperfect tense of a merge, the ordinary Romanian verb for 'to go' or 'to walk'. The verb descends from Latin mergere, which meant 'to dip' or 'to sink'. Romanian shifted the meaning from submerging to moving along, a change linguists usually explain through an intermediate sense like 'to plunge forward' or 'to make one's way'. The imperfect ending -am marks ongoing or habitual past action, and it is identical for both 'I' and 'we'.
