Etymology

Milimetru entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of the wider adoption of the metric system, most likely borrowed from French millimètre. That French word joins the Latin prefix milli- (from mille, "thousand") with mètre, itself from Greek metron, "measure". The word thus states its own definition: one thousandth of a meter.
