Etymology

Secol comes from Latin saeculum, meaning a generation, age, or long span of time. Romanian inherited it as part of its core Latin-derived vocabulary, alongside French siècle, Italian secolo, and Spanish siglo, which show the same root evolving in other Romance languages. The Latin word also gave English secular, through ecclesiastical Latin saecularis, meaning of this present age or worldly. The deeper origin of saeculum before Latin is disputed among scholars, so no secure earlier root is reconstructed.
