Etymology
Minciună descends from a Latin form reconstructed as mentiona, built on the same stem as mentiri, meaning to lie. That stem also gave the Romanian verb a minți, to lie. The root goes back to a Proto-Indo-European word for thinking, the same root behind Latin mens and English mind. Over time the sense narrowed in Romanian from mental activity to a spoken falsehood.
