Scuzați-mă combines the imperative form of the verb a scuza with the clitic pronoun mă, meaning me. A scuza entered Romanian through French excuser and Italian scusare, both descending from Latin excusare, built from ex- and causa, meaning to plead a case or clear from blame. The polite formal imperative scuzați, aimed at a stranger or a group, took the object pronoun as a suffix, a normal pattern for Romanian imperatives.
