Etymology

Linie entered Romanian from French ligne, reinforced by Latin linea and Italian linea, part of the 19th-century wave of Western Romance borrowings that modernized Romanian vocabulary. Latin linea originally meant a linen thread or cord, from linum, flax, because early straight lines were marked by stretching a taut flax string. The same root gives English line and linen.
