Etymology

Ajuț is a spoken, dialectal spelling of ajuți, the second person singular present of a ajuta, to help. The verb descends from Latin adiutare, a frequentative of adiuvare, to help or assist. In Romanian verb grammar, the person-marking -i regularly turns a preceding t into ț, so ajuta becomes ajuți. In fast or regional speech that final weak -i is barely heard, and some folk or old texts write it as ajuț, dropping it entirely.
