Etymology
Romanian borrowed "ataca" from French "attaquer" during the 18th and 19th centuries, when the language absorbed large numbers of French and Italian words to replace or supplement older Slavic and Ottoman vocabulary. French "attaquer" itself came from Italian "attaccare", meaning to attach or to join battle. The word did not evolve from Latin inside Romanian, it was imported whole and simply fitted with the native infinitive ending "-a".
