Etymology

Națiune entered Romanian in the modern era as a learned borrowing from French nation, itself from Latin natio, nationis, meaning birth or a people bound by common birth. The Latin root goes back to nasci, to be born. Romanian took the word in wholesale, alongside many other French and Latin abstract nouns, during the nineteenth-century push to modernize its vocabulary.
