Etymology
Sfârșit is the past participle of the verb a sfârși, meaning to end or finish. Romanian dictionaries trace a sfârși back to Latin, most likely from ex- combined with finire, the same root behind finire in Italian and finir in French. In Romanian, the Latin prefix ex- often collapsed into an initial s- sound, which explains the start of the word. Over time this participle came to work as an ordinary noun meaning end.
