Etymology
Regat is built on the same root as rege, "king", which Romanian inherited from Latin rex, regis. Romanian added the suffix -at, a pattern used to name a ruler's domain, seen also in ducat (from duce, "duke") and principat (from prinț, "prince"). The word gained wide use in the 19th century, including for the Old Kingdom of Romania before 1918 and later for the country as a monarchy.
