Etymology
The word comes from the Romanian noun "noapte" (night), which descends from Latin "nox, noctis". Adding the enclitic definite article "-a" produces "noaptea", literally "the night". Romanian regularly turns the definite form of time nouns into adverbs of time, so "noaptea" also means "at night", the same way "ziua" means "during the day".
