Etymology
Jur traces back to the Latin gyrus, meaning a circle or ring, which Latin itself borrowed from Greek gyros. In Romanian the root narrowed to name the space that encircles a point, and it now survives mainly inside fixed phrases rather than as a free-standing word. The same root shows up, disguised, inside înconjura, the everyday verb for surrounding or going around something.
