Etymology

Romanian took "simplu" from French "simple" during the nineteenth century, when scholars deliberately pulled the language back toward its Latin roots and away from Slavic and Ottoman influence. Behind the French word stands Latin "simplus" and "simplex", built from a root meaning "one" and a root meaning "fold". The original sense was something like "one-fold", the opposite of something folded many times over and thus complicated.
