Etymology

Închide comes from the Latin verb includere, a compound of the prefix in- and claudere, meaning to shut or to close. Claudere itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root tied to the idea of a hook or peg used to fasten something shut. Romanian kept the in- prefix fused onto the root, while other Romance languages often kept the bare root alone.
