Etymology

Pa is an informal farewell interjection, not a word inherited from Latin through the normal sound changes that shaped most of the Romanian core vocabulary. It belongs to a class of short, easily repeated words that arise in child-directed speech, similar in shape and function to English bye-bye. Because such words tend to form independently rather than descend from a common ancestor, no PIE root can be reliably reconstructed for it.
