Etymology

Zic is the first person singular (and third person plural) present of the verb a zice, meaning to say or to tell. The verb descends from Latin dicere, with the Latin d regularly turning into z before the vowel i in Romanian, the same shift seen in zece from decem, ten. Latin dicere itself goes back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to point out or pronounce solemnly.
