Etymology
Pană comes from Latin penna, meaning feather. Penna traces back through Proto-Italic to the Proto-Indo-European root *pet-, meaning to fly or to rush. That same root produced the English word feather by a different, Germanic path, so the two words are distant relatives despite looking unrelated. Latin penna also passed into French and Italian and, through French, into English as pen, since early writing instruments were cut from bird quills.
