Etymology

Potrivit is the past participle of the verb a potrivi, meaning to adjust, to match, or to make something fit. The verb came into Romanian from a Slavic source built on a root meaning to hit the mark or to land on something correctly, the same root seen in Polish trafić and Ukrainian потрапити. Over time the participle settled into ordinary use as an adjective meaning suitable, and later hardened into a formal preposition meaning according to, common in news writing.
