Etymology

Romanian borrowed "misiune" from French "mission" in the nineteenth century, as part of a wave of French loanwords that modernized Romanian vocabulary. French "mission" in turn descends from Latin "missio, missionem", a noun formed from "mittere", meaning to send. The word entered Romanian alongside institutions it named: diplomatic missions, religious missions, military missions.
