Etymology
"Plâng" is the first-person singular and third-person plural present of "a plânge," inherited directly from Latin "plangere," meaning to strike the breast in mourning and, by extension, to lament or weep. Romanian kept the plain sense of crying, while French "plaindre" drifted toward pitying or complaining. The Latin verb itself goes back to a root meaning to strike or beat.
