Etymology

Romanian borrowed "platou" from French "plateau" in the modern period, along with many other words tied to dining and later cinema. French "plateau" itself comes from Old French "platel", a diminutive of "plat" (flat), which goes back to Latin and ultimately Greek "platys" (broad, flat). The word kept both the French senses: a flat serving dish and a flat stretch of high land, and Romanian later added the film-set sense from French studio jargon.
