Discret came into Romanian from French discret, which traces to Latin discretus, the past participle of discernere, meaning to separate or distinguish. The Latin verb joins the prefix dis- (apart) with cernere (to sift, to tell apart), the same root behind English discern and secret. The sense shifted over time: someone who can tell apart what should be said from what should stay quiet becomes someone tactful and reserved.
